Healthy Living

Sport and Health Specialism

Oasis Academy Wintringham is a specialist Sport and Health Academy. We understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and endeavour to promote this through our Academy and the local community.

We have a team made up of an Assistant Principal for the Specialism, Health and Emotional well-being nurse, part-time health mentor, six full-time PE teachers, Learning Director Sport, Learning Co-ordinator Sport, and Health Project Leader and two part-time PE teachers.

What have we done?

• MEDICAL ROOM – Equipment including height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, respiratory testing, cholesterol testing, vision and hearing tests.
• SCHOOL DINNERS – We are working with Sodexo and the Student Academy Council, Food for Fitness Team and the school dinner ladies to improve the school dinners and make them healthier.
• HEALTH CHECKS  - Students undergo a yearly health check with the school nurse. These results are then used to identify students at risk. Those identified are then put into specialised groups e.g. Health Kick, opticians, healthy eating etc.
• FITNESS TESTS – Students are tested 3 times a year in PE. This information is put on to the school system so that other learning areas can use it, e.g. Maths analysis.
The Sport and Health Specialism is permeated across all curriculum areas:
• SCIENCE – Pulse rate and blood pressure monitors, steppers, computerised measurers to identify changes in pressure, temperature, speed and time.
• ANTI-SMOKING MATERIALS – For use in Science, ICT, Art, Drama, SEN, BTEC Sport and BTEC Health and Social Care.
• EQUIPMENT to make learning more kinaesthetic, e.g. compasses, maps for Geography, steppers in Science etc.
• DIETARY LEARNING MATERIALS – PSHCE, Science, Drama, SEN, BTEC Sport and BTEC Health and Social Care.
• HEALTHY COOKING OPTIONS – Brown flour, fresh fruit and vegetables.
• LARGE LAMINATED ‘SPORT AND HEALTH’ MESSAGE POSTER IN EVERY CLASSROOM.
• LIBRARY – Funding to improve the books and software needed for research into health issues.
• PE – Heart rate monitors, new computerised fitness suite, reaction boards. 3 hours of PE for all students. BTEC Sport in years 9, 10 and 11
• GROW IT, COOK IT, EAT IT – An initiative that is being used with our students in the Alternative Learning Provision Unit.
• FOCUS GROUPS – Led by external providers on raising aspirations and single gender groups.
• COMPULSORY ENRICHMENT – 1 lesson per week. Students choose their activity, e.g. fishing, golf, netball, trampolining, football, crafts, jewellery making etc.

Health Kick Programme
This was first piloted at our Academy two years ago and its success has now grown. Twenty five students follow a twelve week programme focusing on the different aspects of health. The students make changes to their lifestyle to contribute to health benefits. Those students who are considered as ‘at risk’ during their health checks are invited to join. It is a twelve week programme for one hour a week which combines theory and practical. We work with outside agencies including Grimsby Town Study Support, Specialist Health Promotions and the Food for Fitness Team. Family involvement is crucial to the success of the programme.

Youth Sport Trust Health Hub
We have been recognised as a school that is providing good practice in respect of the Health Specialism and Miss Stennett has been asked to speak at a number of events including the recent School Sports College Conference about the work that the Academy is doing around health. We have recently been made a ‘health hub’ for the YST where we share our good practices with other schools.

Health Mentor
Craig Dobbs is our Health Mentor and he works for twelve hours a week with individual students to provide one on one support. He focuses on improving their knowledge and understanding of health and fitness and what they need to do to lose weight in terms of improvements in their diet and exercise regime.

Health and Emotional Well-being Nurse
Cathy Mason is our lead professional on Health. She works with individuals or groups of students and staff who need guidance and support around all aspects of health.

National Health Strategy
Heidi Stennett (Health Project Leader) has been asked to sit on the Health National Strategy and represent Secondary Schools in the UK. There are currently ten professionals from all different areas of health including the British Heart Foundation, The Youth Sport Trust and Nottingham University Medical Department. The main aim of this group is to provide research and findings which will be presented to the Government to form new policies and ways of improving health in schools.

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
