Dermot Gascoyne Visits the Academy

Lucky students at Oasis Academy Wintringham were treated to a visit from former international heavyweight boxer and former Olympian Dermot Gascoyne.

Dermot is an Athlete Mentor for ‘Living for Sport,’ an online tool designed by Sky Sports and Youth Sports Trust, to inspire 11 -16 year olds to set up and run activities.

This began with three year 10 students, Thomas Watters, Ryan Rice and Erica Leadbetter, working with some year 8 students to raise their confidence through participation in sport.

During the visit Dermot talked to the Sporting Champions and Sports leaders on the British Athletes Commission’s ‘Six Keys to Success.’ He also worked with the Academy’s Student Aspiration Squad on designing an interschool dodgeball competition for students not already taking part in physical activity outside of school. Dermot ended the day working with some boys in a practical boxing session. Noone was knocked out!

The students and staff who had the opportunity to talk to Dermot were all impressed by the dedication and mental toughness required to be an athlete. Dermot also inspired students with the message that it does not matter where you come from or what your background is, with the right attitude, determination and social skills, anything is possible.

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
