Oasis Academy Immingham and Oasis Academy Wintringham celebrate a year of achievement

27/08/2008

The GCSE results published on Thursday 21st August showed Oasis Academy Wintringham had its best results ever with 55 per cent of students achieving 5 A* - C grades. There were some outstanding individual performances from several students who gained A or B grades across the board.

Oasis Academy Immingham also achieved well into the 40s in terms of students achieving 5 A*-Cs grades. Additionally 60 students from Year 9 took their GCSE in Drama or Expressive Arts two years ahead of time, with five receiving A* grades.

The two Principals, Jane Bowman, Oasis Academy Wintringham and Brian Dixon, Oasis Academy Immingham said:

We are proud of what our students have achieved not just at GCSE but through their dedication and commitment throughout the year in a range of areas. We want to build on a year of real progress.

Steve Chalke, Chief Executive of Oasis Community Learning, paid tribute to the leadership of Brian Dixon and Jane Bowman from Oasis Academy Immingham and Oasis Academy Wintringham.

They and their teams are doing excellent jobs. Academic progress is an important measure of how a school is developing. However, by looking at some other impressive indicators of progress that has already been achieved, we can see the promise that the future holds.

The students at Oasis Academy Immingham enjoy a broader curriculum and wider range of courses, and learning is fun. They are much more engaged in their learning, which has lead to a massive improvement in attendance from 86 per cent in the old Immingham School during 2006/07 to 94 per cent in the Academy in 2007/8. This is the best in the school’s recent history.

The new Academy leadership at both Immingham and Wintringham has also tackled the issue of exclusions. At the old Immingham School permanent exclusions were in double figures and treble figure fixed term exclusions. However, the Academy has had no permanent exclusions and only four fixed term exclusions for a total of ten days. This is a remarkable record.

Attendance at Oasis Academy Wintringham has also improved and there have been no permanent exclusions there during the last school year.

The Academies are both working hard to build a sense of community within the schools themselves, as well as around the areas that they serve and also abroad. For example, Wintringham is setting up links with Jacob’s Well, an Oasis project in India, which will lead to student and staff exchanges and Immingham has already developed strong links with the local business community.

Other highlights of this year include:

•   The re-establishment of a sixth form at Oasis Immingham which has already led to 128 students signing up for September 2008.

•   Oasis Academy Wintringham Sports specialism has made a huge impact with outstanding achievements on the sports field. Individual students have represented the County and the Country at both cricket and cross country, whilst the year 10 cricket team reached the final of the Lincolnshire Cup. The school athletics team were overall winners in division B with year 10 boys & girls and year 7 boys winning their age groups, and Year 8 boys reached the final of the local tennis tournament and the girls won a rounders category.
