Six of our students experienced an unforgettable opportunity to visit the heart of Government in London, meeting senior politicians and touring some of the nation’s most historic sites.

The visit was arranged for our students following an invitation from Melanie Onn, MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, on behalf of former Wintringham student Nick Joicey, husband of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.

The group, comprising Peer Leaders and representatives of our school parliament, travelled with staff members Mr Clough and Mrs Oldershaw. After arriving at Westminster, they were welcomed at Portcullis House before walking to Downing Street.

At 11 Downing Street, our students were greeted by Nick Joicey and were joined by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who spent 40 minutes engaging in open conversation, answering questions, and sharing insights into her role in Government. Students asked thoughtful questions about politics, leadership, and life in the Commons, with Reeves praising their knowledge and curiosity.

The group also posed for photos in the State Room and viewed the Chancellor’s famous Red Box.

In a special highlight, Nick Joicey led the group on a surprise tour of 10 Downing Street, where they explored the Cabinet Office, historic state rooms, and even saw treasures such as Churchill’s reading chair, a fragment of moon rock, and the British flag from the 1969 lunar landings. Students also enjoyed seeing the staircase made famous by the hit Christmas film ‘Love Actually,’ and meeting Larry, the Downing Street cat.

The day continued with a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament, including Westminster Hall, the Chapel, St Stephen’s Hall, and the House of Commons Chamber. Students learned about parliamentary traditions, the history of the building, and the significance of memorials to MPs David Amess and Jo Cox.

Principal of Oasis Academy Wintringham Mr D Scott said:

“This was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience for our students. Meeting the Chancellor and exploring such historic sites has inspired them and given them a deeper understanding of how our democracy works. We are grateful to Melanie Onn, Nick Joicey, and Rachel Reeves for making this extraordinary day possible.”

Mr D Clough, Head of Year, added:

“It was a privilege to accompany our students on such a remarkable visit. They represented our academy with maturity and curiosity, asking insightful questions and engaging confidently with senior figures in Government. I am incredibly proud of how they embraced the opportunity and know it will stay with them for years to come.”

The students returned to Grimsby tired but thrilled, carrying stories of an unforgettable day that brought British history and politics vividly to life.
